wOOD
LIVER & GALL bladder
From the Wood element, we gather our intelligence and our potential for growth and cultivation. The Wood element is connected to the season of Spring and new growth, as a tree pushes and squeezes sap to the surface of its branches to grow new leaves, so does the Liver organ increase the volume of blood to rejuvenate cells. The Liver organ is responsible for all things related to the blood, detoxifying, purifying, building, flowing, and storing. The Liver is also accountable for elimination through the skin, the quality of the eyes, muscles, ligaments and tendons. The Gallbladder houses and secretes bile, a liquid used for digestion in the Stomach and Intestines, a substance pertinent for elimination and assimilation. In other words, the Gall Bladder meridian holds things together, it’s a pathway in the body that looks like a netting literally holding the body in place. The Wood element is brought to a halt when we overeat, and eat heavy, spicy, processed foods and when alcohol and red meat are consumed in excess, particularly late at night. Constant pursuits to overachieve with excessive behaviours, where no time for rest and recouping is taken, topple the stability of the Wood element within our system.

We build up the energy in the Liver and Gallbladder networks by eating dark, leafy green vegetables and taking herbs like dandelion, nettle, cleavers and milk thistle. Becoming a vegetarian is highly advised while supporting a detoxifying lifestyle where exercise is performed out in nature surrounded by green forests. Adapting to becoming more at ease while embracing change and going with the flow helps balance the mental aspects. Building a meditation practice focused on compassion helps nourish the emotional aspects of the Wood element. Initiating a creative outlet will greatly support the flow of energy for this element. The Makka Ho pose is Dragon fly (seated wide legs, forward fold) with variations of reaching the torso over to the side with the arm up to access the Gall Bladder and Liver meridians.
